Nuno sa Punso

The NUNO SA PUNSO is not a dwarf but a dwarf-like spirit of an old man who is dwelling in an anthill or termite mound. It gets easily angry at those who comes near its mound or causes damage to it.

The nuno can curse those who have offended it in any way by using its magical power. For example, if you pee on its mound, it can make your genitals swell. If you kick its mound, your feet will be swollen.

To counter its curse, the victims should ask for forgiveness from the nuno which is sometimes done together with the offering of fruits, animals such as chickens and pigs, special drinks and other material things.

The funny side though is that there is a theory that some albularyos make up the story that these victims were suffering because they've angered a nuno sa punso, conduct the offering ritual to appease the goblin but secretly steals their offerings for their family's consumption, which led some people to make fun of mounts which were believed to be inhabited by the goblin by intentionally urinating or stepping on them.

Mermaids, Mermen and Sirens - Sea Spirits that Protect and Destruct

Mermaids, Mermen and Sirens are mythological creatures believed to be sea spirits or water spirits They can bring destruction or protection to sea travelers.

Some people consider them as the gods and goddesses of the sea; having power to cause long journeys and shipwrecks, and sometimes save seafarers by making them hear spell-binding singing voices that they will subconsciously follow.

The Ethereal City of Biringan

It is believed that the Earth is made of several layers. Most of these layers are unseen or hidden before the human eye. Here in the Philippines, I have heard about a city named Biringan, which means "hanapan ng nawawala" if translated in Tagalog. That is because according to folklore, it serves as the dwelling place of the dead and missing people.

Biringan is an ethereal city which is believed to be located somewhere between Calbayog City and Catarman. Those who claim that they already saw this mysterious spot described it as acity of light because it is highly illuminated. Some people think of it as the dwelling place of Engkantos,Aswang and Lost Souls.

Sometimes, it suddenly appears and would also disappear quickly. Explorers theorized that the reason why it cannot be seen is because it is situated in a different plane or layer and the only way to get there is through a portal, through astral travelling or by using ESP. ESP or Extra Sensory Perception simply means the ability to get information using our extra senses.

I cannot say that I believe or I do not believe that Biringan exists but its story really caught my interest and I would like to explore more about it. Especially, when I learned that satellite mapping photography could track something bright on the spot where it is believed to be located.

I also find it interesting that some construction and appliance businesses there claim that they get orders from the residents of the city. The only problem is that once they try to deliver the items, which were already paid in full by the buyers, the address is nowhere to be found.

There are also stories where in public vehicles were rented by passengers who were asking to be brought to Biringan City. These passengers will pay in full before the travel begins. The drivers will pass by a strange city that they haven't seen before. And then, the passengers will just disappear together with the city, and the bus crew will find themselves together with their vehicles left on top of a mountain or a wilderness.

Nowadays, there are some people who have Facebook accounts and other internet accounts who claim that they are from Biringan City. Their photos show that they do not have philtra.

Engkatos Dwelling in the Philippines

An Engkanto, according to folklore, is anenvironmental spirit that has a human form. They occupy a layer in our world which is not openly accessible to us. However, this layer has portals; and there are certain schedules where they open and close. Those who would be able to get inside should also be able to get out before these portals close; lest, they will be trapped in there and would have to wait for the next schedule before they can come out.

 

Engkantos, being deities, have the ability to cause ailments, depression and confusion among human beings. They can mislead travellers and kidnap those that they like or those they pity and bring them to their realm.

 

It is believed that if they become fond of you or if they want to help you, they will take you to their space and give you an ability that will make you powerful or wealthy. There are people who have been in coma or have lost their minds in many days who afterward claim that they were following strange beings to strange places. They are not even aware that they have been in such condition for a long time. Most of them  thought that they had only been away for a while.

Oftentimes, engkantos are thought of as fallen angels because of their appearance and supernatural abilities. They  look so good but they usually have 1 or 2 flaws. Take for example, a very beautiful woman with pointed ears and a very handsome man with the legs of a horse.

 

The Dwelling Place of Engkantos

 

There is a theory that the Earth we live in is made of 3 layers. There lower layer is the Underworld and it serves as the space of lower spirits. The middle layer is where we, human beings, dwell; and the third layer is otherwise known as Skyworld, the space of higher beings such as engkantos.

 

Engkantos and Human Beings

 

It is believed that some of these higher beings from the higher layer of the Earth called Skyworld used to mingle and interact with human beings. Some of them even had relationships with humans and they bore kids for them. This may be the reason why some of us have strong connections to higher spirits. Simply because some of our ancestors came from Skyworld.

Unfortunately, since human beings took advantage of the engkantos who were trying to help us then by teaching us technology and effective healing methods, they placed a veil between their dwelling place and ours. Nowadays, only chosen people can interact with them. They no longer make themselves very accessible to us because some of our ancestors became too dependent on them; asking for everything they need without working for it and borrowing stuff that they don't return. 
 

The Parallel Universe

 

The parallel universe may not really be another universe but just another layer of the Earth. That can be the Underworld or the Skyworld. Purportedly, the souls of human beings who have spiritual relatives from these 2 Earth layers will go there when they die.

The Celestial and the Human Being

According to lore, there aregigantic beings in the galaxy who are very powerful. They are about 2000 ft. tall and are called Celestials. Their duty is to guard the entire universe. One day, a human being contacted one of them.

CELESTIAL: What do you need?

HUMAN: We are experiencing massive psychic attacks. Please help us.

CELESTIAL: Sorry I can't.

HUMAN: Why not? You are big and powerful.

Why We Have Folklores

A folklore is an unauthenticated story that was supposed to explain the origin of something.

Most folklores are quite popular and are considered facts by our ancestors although their authenticity was never proven. Furthermore, most of the characters depicted in them are exaggerated and categorized as supernatural.

 

Storytelling has always been a very good way of bringing the family closer. It always served as an excellent bonding moment. Prior to the Spanish colonization, our ancestors regularly gather to share folklores within families and communities. It also became the elders' way of passing on their knowledge to the next generation.

 

Influencing the beliefs of others, educating them and molding their future can easily be done then by means of telling them interesting stories. And since our ancestors lack the means to validate the tales that they hear from their elders, they will simply believe what they hear from them as a sign of respect.

When the Spaniards colonized our country, they created a lot of stories that have been handed down from generation to generation for the sake of social control. It's been their way of planting fear in the minds of our ancestors so that it will be easier to make them obey their will and attract them to the religion that they brought into the country.

Aside from the fact that our colonizers brought most these folklores to us, it is man's nature to be curious about the origin of things; and because of that, they will speculate and use their imagination to get answers. This is the reason why a lot offolklores were created and they were passed on from generation to generation.

An Interesting Theory About Amulets

Some Amulets require to be fed with certain prayers or ora. Without these, there is a big chance that it will feed on your own energy. Soon, you'll realized that you are slowly being drained and vulnerable against bad vibes. Possessing an Amulet requires an amount of responsibility and an Amulet Keeper should have the heart to embrace that commitment.

A Speculation on the Bakunawa

Bakunawa, the Mythical Philippine Dragon which is believed to be the cause of lunar eclipse, may not just be what we've thought. Since dragons are considered the symbol of the primal forces in nature, some clairvoyants claim that they see it appear prior to a great natural disaster.

In the 2011 Tōhoku (Japan) Earthquake and Tsunami, one of the psychics that predicted the phenomenon reported that he envisioned a gigantic dragon emerging from the sea. This catastrophe so far, became the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the history of Japan.

It was said that the Bakunawa of Japan rose up to devour the land because dolphins were killed. These symbolic dragons are somewhat believed to be protectors of the sea and would come out whenever people harm the sea and its creatures.

Old Trees Can Be Portals

Old Trees are said to be portals to the world of The Elementals. It is because their roots are deeply set and can reach the deeper layers of the Earth. Most of these elementals go to our space to bring help. The Mist - A Warp of Thoughts

When I was still a teen, I wrote about the story of a place I call "The Mist".

The Mist is a Warp of Thoughts where all the minds of people are weaved together; and the only way to get there is throughAstral Travel.

The Parallel Universe, Biringan City, Skyworld, Akashic Records and other mythological and mysterious places we've known, are believed to be just "thought forms" that are weaved within it. There is also where we can connect to tap higher psychic powers since it has the collection of past, present and future events.

The Mist is also a place where the lost can be found, including our loved ones and their memories. I sometimes wish I can stay there to spend a little more time with them. Soon, I'd start traveling to it more frequently than I did before. Especially now that I have to fight my demons. Who wants to go on a journey with me to The Mist?

Things We May Not Know About The Elementals

DISCLAIMER: There is no scientific proof to the statements written on this article.

Some people have always thought that Engkantos and Elementals are the same. They are not. Engkantos are considered deities while the latter are considered lower in rank compared to them. 

Elementals, to make it simple, are spirits that rule over the elements. There are Earth, Fire, Wood, Water and Air Elementals, and we have a lot of similarities with them.

Each of them has their own personality. Some can be naughty and some can be nice. Some are disciplined while some are unruly. They retaliate when they get hurt. They can also be protective and the moment they feel that something will harm their refuge, their environment and anything they claim as theirs, they will definitely hit back.

Elementals can never be judged based on their appearance. Some of them may look attractive before our eyes while some don’t, but same as it is with humans, looks can never be the basis of one’s true character. On the other hand, it is believed that they dont really have shapes and colors. But they can do shapeshifting to create an appearance. They can appear as Kapres, Fairies, Elves and so on. They also have distinct smells based on their kind. What’s pleasant or unpleasant to our noses may not mean a thing to them. How they smell is the representation of their environment. 

Elementals raise families, too. You might even be surprised to hear that they have their own governments and they submit themselves to certain leaders. If they violate certain rules, they also get punished; and some believe that these offenders and violators, depending on the type of their violation, can be sent to our space to serve their sentence. These can be the ones lurking in our houses, trying to scare or play with the kids, hiding our things for a few days and returning them to spots that we’ve carefully checked before, copying our voices and looks, to mention a few.

The Doppelgangers we encounter are usually Elementals. Why they do that depends on their intention. More likely, it is their way of letting us now that they co-exist with us. In some cases, they shift shapes and take the form of humans, animals and plants because they need something from our world. That may also be their way of mingling with us. If we are curious about their world, they are also curious about ours. Some of them get attracted to the qualities human beings and our world has. There are cases too where they incarnate as humans to be able to study in our schools or to teach people who are called for some special missions.

Elementals were given supernatural abilities that can both be helpful and harmful to humans. It is believed that our ancestors can interact freely with them. In fact, there were ladies in our world that bore them kids. This is one of the reasons why some of us have extraordinary skills. They have lineage among their chosen ones...until veils were placed between our world and theirs because a number of our ancestors started abusing their generosity and stopped observing agreements.

Elementals are not immortal. Just like us, they also die; mostly because of the punishment they get from violating their own laws and human beings' recklessness. They also get sick and procure healing. If there is no qualified healer and healing method in their world, they sometimes go to our world to seek for those.

Though there’s been a gap now between human beings' and the Elementals, some of them still reach out to us, especially to those who have roots from them and to those that they need to assist. At present times, there are people who can heal and perform magick with their help. 

They are more likely advocates who protect the planet we live in as we, humans, destroy what they’re trying to protect. Constantly, I couldn’t help but wonder who the real villains are. Is it the Elementals or is it us, humans?

Ang Lalaki Sa Bintana

Mayroong nag-iisang kapatid ang nanay ko na malapit sa akin. Nuong dalaga pa ako, naisipan kong dalawin siya sa bagong bahay na inuupahan niya sa Guiguinto, Bulacan at manatili duon ng ilang araw. Isang araw, naisipan kong maglibot sa lugar nila. Sa di kalayuan, isang kakaibang bahay ang nakaagaw ng pansin ko. Isa itong maliit na kubo na napakapulido ng pagkakagawa. Labis akong natuwa sa napakalaki at napakalinis nitong bakuran na napapaligiran ng mababang pader at “gate”.

Simula ng makita ko ang bahay na ito, wala nang araw ang lumipas na hindi ko naisipang puntahan ito at saglit na tanawin. Hindi ko rin maiwasang mag-isip kung sino kaya ang nakatira dito at paano sila nagkakasya sa napakaliit na kubo. Sadyang kahali-halina ang kalinisan sa paligid nito.

Isang araw, may natanaw ako dito na isang matandang babae na may hawak na walis tingting. Hindi ko nakita ang mukha niya dahil nakatalikod siya pero napako ang mga mata ko sa buhok niya na kahit puti na lahat ay napakaayos ng pagkakapusod.

Duon ako nagtanong sa isang mama na nakatayo sa di kalayuan, “Mama, kilala n’yo po ba ang nakatira diyan sa kubo?”

“Hindi ineng e. Hindi sila lumalabas. Pero ang alam ko, front lang yang kubo na yan. Ang totoong bahay ay nasa ilalim ng lupa,” tugon niya sa akin.

Nagtaka ako sa narinig ko. Sino naman ang magpapatayo ng bahay sa ilalim ng lupa at bakit nila gagawin iyon?

Nuong huling gabi ng pagtulog ko sa bahay ng tiyahin ko, bigla akong nagising ng madaling araw. Una akong napatingin sa bintana. Mayroon akong nakita na isang lalaking nakadungaw duon mula sa labas. Ang nakapagtataka ay hindi takot ang una kong naramdaman nuon; bagkus ay mistula akong natulala. Pinagmamasdan ko siya at kung may kakayahan lang akong gumuhit ng larawan ng tao, malamang ay maiguguhit ko ang napakaamo niyang mukha, makintab at unat na buhok, makinis na balat at balingkinitang pangangatawan. Nakasuot siya ng pantalong maong at wala siyang pang-itaas. Napakaganda niyang lalaki at hindi ko makakalimutan kailanman ang mga mata niya.

Nang mahimasmasan ako, duon ko naisip kung bakit may lalaki sa bintana. Tinangka kong sumigaw ngunit hirap na hirap akong palabasin ang boses ko. Maya-maya lang, nagawa ko ring sumigaw ng “May tao” na siyang naging dahilan kung bakit nagising ang tiyahin ko at ang asawa niya. Biglang tumalon ang lalaki at nawala sa dilim. Agad kaming lumabas ng bahay. Nakapagtatakang isipin na naakyat niya ang bintanang napakasukol. Hindi ito magagawang akyatin ng ordinaryong tao kung hindi siya gagamit ng hagdan dahil may kataasan ito at wala naman siyang pwedeng kapitan sa pader. Ang pader kung saan naroroon ang bintana ay gawa sa pinagpatong-patong na madudulas na grava.

Ang mga nagtumbahang halaman sa ibaba ng bintana ay patunay na may tumalon mula duon. Nasisiguro kong hindi ako nananaginip lang at ang lalaking iyon ay hindi lamang isang guni-guni.

Bago ako bumalik nang Maynila kinabukasan, nagtanong-tanong pa kami sa mga tao duon kung may kilala silang lalaki na katulad ng lalaking dumungaw sa bintana nang nakaraang gabi. Wala sa kanila ang may nakikilala o nakikita man lang na ganun, ayon sa kanila.

Bago ako sumakay ng tricycle, muli kong sinaglit ang maliit na kubong iyon. Tulad ng madalas kong nakikita, walang tao dito at malinis na malinis ang paligid. Nuon ko lang naisip, bakit nga ba ako pumupunta lagi sa lugar na ito gayong napaka delikado ng daan papunta dito? Upang marating kasi ang lugar, kailangan pang tumawid sa sapa gamit ang isang napakanipis na tulay. Mapuno rin ang daan patungo sa kubo at walang mga bahay.

Tila ba hindi ko na naiisip ang kaligtasan ko nang mga panahong iyon. Hindi normal sa akin ang lumakad sa mga ganitong klaseng lugar dahil sa malaking takot ko sa ahas. Idagdag pa, paano kung may mga masasamang loob sa lugar na iyon at basta na lamang ako hilahin kung saan? Hindi ko rin maiwasang isipin na maaaring ang lalaking nakita ko sa bintana ay konektado sa bahay na ito. Hindi ko rin maipaliwanag kung papano ko natunton ang lugar na ito nuong halos kadarating ko pa lang sa Guiguinto.

Kung may katotohanan man ang mga haka-haka kong ito o kung produkto lamang ang mga ito ng malikhain kong isip ay hindi ko na nagawang alamin pa. Mula ng makauwi ako sa Maynila ay hindi na natahimik ang aking diwa.

24 taon na ang nakakaraan mula ng nangyari ito sa akin. Nakapag-asawa na ako at nagkaroon ng 4 na anak; ngunit ang kaanyuan ng lalaking iyon ay malinaw na malinaw pa ring nakatatak sa isipan ko. Hindi ko rin maipaliwanag kung bakit may mga araw na tila ba tinatawag ako ng bahay kubong iyon. Gusto ko itong balikan, tanawin ulit at magbakasakaling makitang muli ang mahiwagang lalaking iyon. Parang lagi na lang may nagsasabi sa akin na makikita ko pa siyang muli.
